The Matador

oil on canvas
60x73cm

Each year, the feria of Nîmes attracts nearly a million visitors. First of all, there is the Féria de Pentecôte, in May, then the more family-friendly Féria des Vendanges, in September. Both are centered around the bull and the Arena of Nîmes.

There is the Pegoulade parade, taken from the Provençal: pègue, a word that comes from pitch, this flammable resin originally used during this old torchlight procession with different floats each year according to a chosen theme. Or, the abrivado, which is a kind of parade of bulls protected by herdsmen on horseback. Or, the confinement, which is the release of bulls in the streets. Also must-sees: the wanderings of the penas, the musical troupes, the bodegas, the balls... For almost a week, it's party time in all the districts of Nîmes!
